A PhD position is available to work under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Frank Cichos on the experimental development of a model system.
Living objects are adaptable, highly optimized and complex non-equilibrium systems which have developed specific functions based on environmental signals. Within these systems the appearance of those functions is a complex interplay of a multitude of biochemical and physical processes which are often difficult to disentangle. The scope of this PhD position is to experimentally develop a bottom-up model system that allows to explore how function arises from a simple set of fundamental interaction rules. For this study, active particles will be used as fundamental non-equilibrium building blocks. Advanced optical control techniques as developed in the group and machine learning algorithms will be employed to create networks of interacting active particles.
The successful applicant should have or expect to achieve a Masters-level degree in Physics, Natural Sciences or Materials Science. The applicant shall be interested in working at the interface between soft matter physics, biophysics and photonics. The successful applicant will demonstrate strong interest and self-motivation in the subject, good experimental practice and the ability to think analytically and creatively. Good computer skills as well as presentation and writing skills in English are required.
