The University of Copenhagen seeks to appoint a professor in the field of wood science.


Description of the scientific environment

The Section of Forest, Nature and Biomass is part of the Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management and is located Rolighedsvej 23, Frederiksberg. The successful applicant will primarily be associated with the Research group of Biomass Science and Technology, which includes multiple analytical facilities, including a laboratory with a range of microscopes and laboratory facilities. The research focusses on both fundamental and applied aspects of the sustainable utilization of biomass for materials, chemicals and bioenergy.


Job description

The field of the professorship encompass all aspects of wood as a natural resource: its formation in plants, its chemical and physical structure, mechanical properties, physical and biological interactions with the environment in nature as well as after harvest and how it can be degraded by biotic and abiotic factors. Wood science also covers the use of wood as a material, the field of wood technology.

The successful applicant must document:

  • a strong background in the overall field of wood science
  • a high degree of original academic production at an international level, including considerable contributions to the understanding of cellulose organization in the wood cell wall and cell wall-water interactions
  • research activities based on the application of combinations of spectroscopic and microscopic techniques within wood science including suitable analysis of such data
  • experience in research management and other management functions, such as engagement in the university’s external academic activities, as well as knowledge and technology transfer experience with research-based teaching
  • ability to attract research funding


Applicants are required to have university level teaching experience, documented teaching competencies and must be able to explain and reflect upon own teaching practice and portfolio. Formal pedagogical training or supervision equivalent to the University of Copenhagen teacher training programme for assistant professors is required.

Besides conducting own research, the successful candidate is expected to serve as a driver for the development of the research field and exploitation of the cross disciplinary potentials within the department. Other duties include assessment tasks, grant applications, and research management such as supervision and training of research fellows and other staff. The successful applicant must also teach, supervise, prepare and participate in examinations, and fulfill other tasks requested by the Department.


Assessment of applicants will primarily consider their level of documented, original scientific production at an international level, including contributions to developments in their field, as well as their documented teaching qualifications. Managerial and out-reach qualifications of applicants including ability to attract external funding will also be considered.


Description of the department

Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management (IGN) conducts research and education on the past, present and future physical, chemical and biological environments of the Earth and their interactions with societal and human systems to provide candidates and research in support of sustainable future solutions for society. IGN conducts research and research based teaching within the fields, Geography & Geoinformatics, Geology–Geoscience, Forest, Nature and Biomass and Landscape Architecture and Planning.

Terms of employment

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

Commencing salary is currently DKK 621.105 including annual supplement (+ pension DKK106.208).

Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
