The terahertz (THz) domain of the electromagnetic spectrum constitutes a major
challenge for the development of new technologies for communications, health and safety.
In recent years significant progress has been made in the design of THz sources. However,
the demand for photonic components capable of addressing a wide spectral range (0.1-
10THz) with fast and contrasted responses remains significant. Among the solutions
considered, artificial structures based on electromagnetic resonators called metamaterials
have shown possibilities of controlling THz signals . Dynamic control is envisaged with
photogenerated metamaterials in a semiconductor layer  but with limitations in terms of
modulation frequency and pump energy. In a first work carried out jointly between the
Photon axis of the Pascal Institute (IP) and the Institute of Electronics and Systems (IES),
we have demonstrated theoretically  then experimentally the amplitude modulation of
a THz beam by using a laser in quasi-continuous low energy power regime (about W.cm-2).

The objective of the thesis concerns the study and design of photogenerated
metamaterials in dynamic regime for the spatial and temporal control of THz waves. The
doctoral student will model and design photogenerated metamaterials at the IP, will
participate in the stages of manufacturing prototypes in clean rooms and their
characterization in the THz field at the IES. He / she should have good knowledge in
electromagnetism, in semiconductor physics and must be interested in both modeling and
