About BSC

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses MareNostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, and is a hosting member of the PRACE European distributed supercomputing infrastructure. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 650 staff from 49 countries.

Context And Mission

The Department of Earth Sciences of the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre-Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS), BSC-ES henceforth (bsc.es/earth-sciences, https://earth.bsc.es/wiki) is one of the most active departments in Europe in atmospheric composition modelling, climate prediction, climate services and the IT aspects to make that research possible and efficient. The department is currently composed of about 75 people, including scientists and technical and support staff, and is structured in four distinct but interacting research groups: Atmospheric Composition (AC), Climate Prediction (CP), Earth System Services (ESS), and Computational Earth Sciences (CES). The BSC-ES leads or is involved in a number of collaborative projects and service contracts with a large number of partners, both nationally and internationally. The BSC-ES is looking for a Research Scientist in Climate Data Quality Control to perform basic assessment of the climate datasets served by the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S).

Key Duties
  • The successful applicant will join the BSC-ES to perform basic scientific and technical assessment of datasets served by the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). The primary focus will be on the assessment of well-established networks of observations (e.g. radio-soundings for temperature and wind profiles) using the methodologies and workflows defined in the C3S_512 contract. The incumbent will also assess reanalysis and seasonal forecast datasets. Moreover, the candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to the improvement of the assessment workflows and methodologies that ensure that the highest quality is held in the most important climate data repository in Europe.
