In the Institute for Energy and Climate Research - Fundamentals of Electrochemistry (IEK-9), we perform research on highly relevant topics related to the energy transition. For example, we investigate new battery concepts and how we can turn the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) to the fuel of the future. The aim is to develop sustainable and cost-effective electrochemical systems with improved energy and power density, longer life time, and maximal safety. Your Job:

Machine learning techniques combined with spectroscopic observables are developed and demonstrated for optimized battery management at the cell level. The aim is to achieve optimized fast charging performance, while at the same time industry standard battery lifetimes are matched or even outperformed.Your main tasks will include:

  • Investigate battery cell behavior using advanced spectroscopic techniques (EIS, NMR, EPR)
  • Devise charging protocols using machine-learning techniques
  • Develop a digital twin in close collaboration with a theory peer PhD student
  • Exchange with external project partners at KIT and Fritz-Haber-Institute (FHI)
  • Participate in project meetings
  • Prepare scientific publications
  • Mentor students and contribute to teaching at RWTH Aachen

Your Profile:

  • M. Sc. degree in Chemistry, Physics, Electrical Engineering or a related field with good final grade
  • Previous experience with impedance spectroscopy and magnetic resonance required
  • Experience in electrochemistry and Fourier transform spectroscopy desirable
  • Good mechanical skills, motivation to building new devices
  • Fluent command of written and spoken English
  • High degree of independence and commitment
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to cooperate and work in a team
  • Strong motivation for pursuing a PhD within 3 years
