Professor Dilshani Dissanayake - Head of the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine University of Colombo.

Professor Dissanayake is the current Head of the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine University of Colombo. She is the founder director of the Research Promotion and Facilitation Centre (RPFC) and the neuroscientist in charge of the neuroscience research laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine, Colombo. Prof. Dissanayake is currently leading a multidisciplinary team of researchers in the University of Colombo, on a World Bank funded project to assess the effects of meditation on health. Her research interests are focused on the sensory processing in the CNS, meditation, schizophrenia and cannabis, diabetic neuropathy and related complications, cognition and falls and animal modelling of sensory processing deficits in CNS. She has also contributed to international studies and publications on mathematical and computer modelling of CNS diseases to minimize the use of animal models.

Keynote speakers:

Dr Bernard Appiah - DrPH, MS, MDC, BPharm, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health, Syracuse University.

Dr Appiah is a Ghanaian public health professional, science journalist, development communicator and a pharmacist with a passion for teaching, research and service. He is an assistant professor at the Department of Public Health in Falk College, Syracuse University. His research centres on translational communication science to influence population health practice and policy in low-income and minority populations in the US and beyond. Bernard moderates the AuthorAID community and facilitates research and grant proposal writing workshops.

Professor Leonorah Tendayi Nyaruwata - Associate Professor of education management, policy and gender, Zimbabwe Open University

Professor Leonorah Tendayi Nyaruwata is associate Professor of Education Management with expertise in research methods; teacher development; gender equality and curriculum development. Over the past 21 years she has worked in Higher education institutions in South Africa, India, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Her work experience covers non- profit sector, private sector and public sector. Some of her note worthy work includes development of curriculum and modules for university at undergraduate, master’s and doctor of philosophy levels. She trained trainers of Training for Enterprise (TFE) programme that is delivered through 42 Ministry of Youth Sport and Recreation Vocational Education Training Centres (VETCs) found in all 10 provinces of Zimbabwe. She has supervised 18 PhD candidates who have successfully completed the studies from 2008. She has supervised 10 projects for secondary and primary school graduates in post graduate certificate education (PGEC). She has also evaluated the inclusive education programs implemented by Leonard Cheshire Trust Zimbabwe (2012, 2016).

Dr Taddese Zerfu - Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Security (GAAFS), University of Edinburgh, UK.

Dr Taddese Zerfu is currently a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Global Academy of Agriculture and Food Security (GAAFS), University of Edinburgh, UK. Has served as a clinician, assistant Professor of public health/Human Nutrition; Senior Research Advisor of Maternal and Child Health Directorate, Federal Ministry of Health, Ethiopia and Senior Nutrition Technical Advisor to the Ministry of Health. Taddese's research focuses on improving our understanding of the nexus between Agriculture, Nutrition, and Health (ANH). Specifically, he is interested in the complex interactions between livestock farming, animal source food consumption, and maternal and child nutrition. Dr Zerfu is also interested in investigating maternal and child health-related issues in low and middle-income settings. Taddese is the winner of the 16th Tore Godal annual Prize, a prestigious award given to young researchers in Ethiopia who write papers on topics related to infectious and non-infectious diseases.
